Welcome to the blog for the UC Davis First Year Seminar: Half the Sky: Gender Equity, Society and You!

In this blog, we will document the discussions that result from UC Davis FRS004, Sec 008--Half the Sky: Gender Equity, Society, and You. The focus of this seminar is the book Half the Sky: Turning Oppression Into Opportunity for Women Worldwide by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, the featured book for the 2013-2014 UC Davis Campus Community Book Project. Kristof and WuDunn argue that the oppression of women worldwide is “the paramount moral challenge” of our time. We will read and discuss the book and relate what we read to our everyday lives and current events found in popular media. The book focuses on the developing world, but many of these issues can be found here in the US. We will strive to think critically and connect our discussion to both the US and other countries around the world. This blog will be our documentation of the discussion that takes place over the quarter. Each blog will be authored by one or more of the students in the class.
